R.E.M.'s Reckoning returns as a remastered 180-gram reissue of the 1984 album where the Athens band sharpened their mystery into something bolder.

Arriving barely a year after Murmur, their second full-length was cut with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, and it sounds lean, live and restless. Michael Stipe's vocals sit a little clearer in the mix, Peter Buck's jangling guitar rings out brighter, and the rhythm section of Mike Mills and Bill Berry pushes everything forward with real urgency.

So. Central Rain, with its pleading refrain, became one of their defining early singles. Harborcoat opens the record with tangled, overlapping vocals, Pretty Persuasion is all ringing chords and forward motion, and (Don't Go Back To) Rockville detours into a countrified plea that Mills sings with genuine heart.

The songs are moody and melodic, full of half-heard stories, rain and small-town longing, with lyrics that reward the close listening the band always seemed to invite. That southern grit makes the record one of the foundation stones of American college rock.

For anyone tracing the band from their earliest days to stadium fame, this is an essential stop, and for many longtime fans it is still the R.E.M. album they reach for first.
