Murmur, the 1983 first album from R.E.M., arrived as fully formed as any debut ever has, and this remastered 180-gram reissue does justice to its mysterious, murky beauty.

Recorded in Charlotte, North Carolina with producers Mitch Easter and Don Dixon, the record rejected the gloss of early-eighties rock in favour of something quieter and more enigmatic. Michael Stipe's half-buried vocals, Peter Buck's ringing guitar and the agile interplay of Mike Mills and Bill Berry created a sound that would help shape American college rock and alternative music for years to come.

Radio Free Europe sets the scene with nervy energy and a chorus that feels just out of reach, its lyrics famously hard to decipher. Talk About the Passion is a bittersweet, cello-touched gem, while Pilgrimage builds a haunting, hymn-like atmosphere from layered vocals and shimmering guitars. Perfect Circle slows things to a gorgeous, piano-led hush, one of the most quietly moving songs in the band's catalogue.

Murmur was a critical sensation on release and remains a cornerstone of indie and alternative rock, a record that rewards repeated listens with new details each time.
