Politically charged and brimming with hooks, Document is R.E.M.'s 1987 leap toward the big time, here as a limited 180-gram pressing.

Their fifth album and last studio record for I.R.S., it was the first they co-produced with Scott Litt, whose clearer, punchier sound pulled Michael Stipe's vocals out of the murk of earlier releases. The lyrics took aim at the politics of Reagan-era America, while the band's jangle picked up a harder, more muscular edge that pointed straight toward bigger stages.

The One I Love became their breakthrough hit, a seemingly romantic song with a famously cold twist. It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) rattles off a breathless stream of images over a racing beat, while Finest Worksong opens the record with a defiant call to action. Exhuming McCarthy draws a pointed line between past and present paranoia.

Peter Buck's guitars ring loud and clear, and Mike Mills and Bill Berry give the songs urgent momentum from start to finish, with Mills' backing vocals adding a sweet counterweight to Stipe's bark.

It's the sound of a cult band getting ready for arenas, and a cornerstone of American alternative rock that still sounds fierce today.
