Metal Health kicked the door wide open for eighties hard rock, and Quiet Riot's 1983 breakthrough still sounds like an arena full of raised fists.
After years grinding through the Los Angeles club scene, the band regrouped around singer Kevin DuBrow with guitarist Carlos Cavazo, bassist Rudy Sarzo and drummer Frankie Banali. With Spencer Proffer producing, they made the first heavy metal album to reach number one on the Billboard 200, opening the floodgates for the glam metal wave that followed.
The title track "Metal Health (Bang Your Head)" remains one of the genre's great rallying cries, all stomping drums and gang vocals. Their cover of Slade's "Cum On Feel the Noize" turned a glam-era anthem into an MTV staple, while "Slick Black Cadillac" revisits a song from the band's earlier days with extra muscle. "Let's Get Crazy" does exactly what the title promises.
Cavazo's riffs are tight and punchy, Banali hits like a sledgehammer, and DuBrow's raspy wail ties it all together with pure swagger. There is not an ounce of irony here, just a band that knew it had finally caught lightning.
Decades on, Metal Health remains the blueprint for party-ready heavy rock, and it belongs right next to the loudest records on your shelf.
