Queens of the Stone Age's 1998 debut is where Josh Homme's post-Kyuss vision began, and this 2LP set brings its hypnotic desert grind home.

After Kyuss split, Homme headed back to the California desert with a new idea: heavy music that grooved rather than bludgeoned, repetitive enough to put you in a trance. He played most of the instruments himself, with Alfredo Hernández on drums, and described the result as robot rock. Released in 1998, it laid the foundations for everything the band would build next.

Recorded in Palm Desert in a matter of weeks, with Joe Barresi co-producing and desert-scene regulars Chris Goss and Fred Drake pitching in, it sounds dry, fuzzy and gloriously locked-in. Regular John opens with a mechanical, stop-start chug that sets the tone, Avon rides a swaggering, hip-shaking groove, and If Only shows Homme's knack for sneaking a pop melody into the haze. Mexicola slows to a menacing, lurching crawl, the kind of riff that seems to get heavier every time it comes around.

Raw and endlessly replayable, it is the blueprint for one of the great modern rock bands, and it has aged remarkably well. Turn it up loud and let the repetition work its strange magic on you.
