Josh Homme invented a word for it: Perfecth, the ninth Queens of the Stone Age studio album, arrives on vinyl with all its deliberate wrongness intact.

Coming three years after In Times New Roman..., the record was produced by Homme with bandmate Michael Shuman and is issued through Matador. The title is a purposeful misspelling of perfect, a fitting badge for a band that has always preferred its grooves slightly bent and its beauty a little bruised.

Nine songs circle different kinds of love, from family and friendship to relationships that wound and heal in equal measure. Insignificant Other sits at the heart of the album, while Mono plays games with the listening experience itself, shifting between mono and stereo and from intimate scale to orchestral sweep. Easy Street, the first taste of the record, and closer Run Away from the Mob frame a set that moves between menace and tenderness with that familiar Queens swing.

After roughly three decades of desert-born riffs, Queens of the Stone Age still sound like nobody else, dark and oddly romantic at the same time. Perfecth looks set to be another chapter worth hearing on wax, where the band's heavy low end and sly details have room to breathe and reveal themselves across repeat plays.
