In Times New Roman... finds Queens of the Stone Age at their darkest and most defiant, a beautifully ugly rock record spread across two LPs in a gatefold jacket that suits its grand, gothic sweep.

Released in 2023, their eighth studio album was their first since Villains and arrived after a turbulent period in Josh Homme's personal life. The band produced it themselves, recording at Homme's Pink Duck studio and several other rooms, and the songs circle around the hard work of acceptance. Homme held off on finishing his vocals until he had lived through that period, and the weight shows in every line. It also closes a run of three albums the band made for Matador.

Opener "Obscenery" sets the tone with slow-coiling, menacing riffs, "Paper Machete" is pure swaggering groove, and "Emotion Sickness" pairs a sing-along chorus with bruised lyrics. The nine-minute closer "Straight Jacket Fitting" is the grand finale, a sprawling, shifting epic that ends the album on a high.

Throughout, thick, tangled guitars lock into tight rhythms while Homme's croon slides between sneer and vulnerability, often within a single verse.

This gatefold double vinyl gives the record room to breathe, and it stands among the strongest late-career statements from a band that still refuses to coast, more than two decades into its run.
