Queen trimmed back the operatic excess and leaned into punchy rock and funk on The Game, the 1980 album that took them to number one on both sides of the Atlantic.

Recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich with co-producer Reinhold Mack, it was also the first Queen album to feature a synthesizer, the Oberheim OB-X that opens "Play the Game". After years of proudly declaring no synths on their sleeves, the band embraced new textures without losing any of their trademark bombast.

John Deacon's "Another One Bites the Dust" rides one of the most famous bass lines in rock, a disco-funk strut that topped the US charts. Freddie Mercury's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" tips its hat to fifties rockabilly and also went to number one in America, while Brian May's "Save Me" delivers a big, aching power ballad.

Elsewhere, May and Roger Taylor contribute heavier, harder-edged songs of their own, and the whole album moves with a lean, radio-ready efficiency that sets it apart from their more elaborate seventies work.

At just over 35 minutes, it is short, sharp and packed with hits, the sound of a band reinventing itself for a brand new decade and making the whole thing look effortless.
