Propagandhi's Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes returns in this reissue pressing, and a quarter century on it remains one of the sharpest political punk records ever to come out of Canada.
Released in 2001, the Winnipeg band's third album was their first full-length with bassist Todd Kowalski writing and singing alongside guitarist Chris Hannah, with Jord Samolesky pounding away behind the kit. Produced by Ryan Greene, it hit harder and faster than anything they had made before, with real technical bite, and the jokes of their early records gave way to tightly wound fury.
Opener "Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An" borrows its title from an East Timorese independence slogan and sets off at a full sprint. "Back to the Motor League" turns its fire on the music industry's co-opting of punk ideals, tipping its hat to the Dead Kennedys along the way. "Natural Disasters" and "Albright Monument, Baghdad" pack entire arguments into a couple of breathless minutes, all whiplash riffs and shouted conviction.
None of it overstays its welcome. Most songs land in under three minutes, yet the lyrics carry more ideas than plenty of double albums manage.
For anyone who likes their punk fast and unapologetically furious, this one still draws blood.
