Prince stirred the pot on purpose with Controversy, his 1981 album, presented here on 150 gram vinyl along with a poster for the wall.

His fourth album found him writing, producing, arranging and playing nearly everything himself, sharpening the lean Minneapolis sound he had mapped out on Dirty Mind. The record pokes at religion, sex, politics and his own mystique, with Prince turning the questions the press kept asking about him into the subject of the songs.

The title track "Controversy" is a seven-minute funk sermon, built on a wiry guitar and a relentless beat, complete with a recited Lord's Prayer in the middle. "Let's Work" is a tight, rubbery command to hit the dance floor, while "Do Me, Baby" stretches out into a slow-burning falsetto ballad that drips with longing.

"Ronnie, Talk to Russia" fires off a frantic Cold War plea, proof that Prince could be urgent and playful at the same time. Synths and guitar sit side by side, pointing directly toward the sound that would soon conquer the world.

This is Prince on the verge of superstardom, confident and wildly inventive, and it remains one of the most rewarding and replayable records of his early years, the bridge between Dirty Mind and everything that followed.
