Primal Scream went bright, glossy and slightly sinister on Beautiful Future, back here on limited red vinyl.
Released in 2008, the Scottish band's ninth studio album paired Bobby Gillespie and company with two producers known for crisp, modern pop, Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John and Paul Epworth. The result trades some of the abrasive electronics of their early 2000s records for big choruses and sleek, sunny surfaces, though the lyrics often peer at the darker world underneath. It arrived two years after Riot City Blues and showed a band still restless after more than two decades together.
"Can't Go Back" was the lead single, a punchy, hook-heavy rocker, while the title track opens the album with a woozy, almost psychedelic glow. "Necro Hex Blues" brings in Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age for a fuzzed-out blast of desert grit, and folk singer Linda Thompson lends her voice to a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Over & Over." Elsewhere Lovefoxxx of CSS turns up for a playful duet, adding to the album's party atmosphere.
It is one of the band's most openly pop-minded records, and it rewards a fresh listen with ears tuned to its melodies. The red vinyl makes the most of that glossy sheen.
