Pokey LaFarge goes back to basics on Rent Money, a 2026 album about working hard, getting by and refusing to sound like anybody else.
The Illinois-born singer and songwriter has spent his career championing early American music, from his busking days on the road to records for Third Man, Rounder and New West. Rent Money arrives on his own Boxer Boy Records with producer Elliot Bergman, known for his work with Wild Belle, and it draws on urban blues, primal rock and roll, early jazz, ragtime, boogie, gospel and even first wave reggae. LaFarge set out to make music no algorithm could copy, and the warm, slightly ragged performances make the case.
The title track, which he describes as a classic country blues, sets the tone for a record about getting through hard times with your spirit intact, and money worries hang over plenty of these songs. "Hambone" and "The Thing" carried the album's loose, rhythmic swagger out as early singles, while "Big Boss Man" and "Stick Together" round out a set that feels made for a crowded dance floor.
It is the sound of an old soul with very modern worries, delivered with a grin and a shuffle. Drop the needle, push back the furniture and let the band do the rest.
