Poison Idea's Record Collectors are Still Pretentious Assholes puts the Portland hardcore legends' most notorious early EP back in circulation on purple vinyl, with bonus cuts in tow.
The original 12-inch arrived in 1984, its cover a cheeky shot of guitarist Pig Champion's own towering record collection. Fronted by the ferocious Jerry A., the band was already a fearsome force in the American hardcore underground, yet this release showed them sneaking subtle rock muscle into the blur. This expanded edition rounds up the original tracks and adds songs from two 1985 compilations, where that heavier, rock-leaning edge kept developing.
Legalize Freedom blasts past in a hail of buzzsaw guitar and barked vocals, barely pausing for breath. Laughing Boy, first heard on the Drinking Is Great EP, and Die on Your Knees, from the Cleanse the Bacteria compilation, show the band beefing up the riffs without losing an ounce of speed. A cover of the Stooges' I Gotta Right closes things with a nod to the proto-punk roots underneath it all.
The title is a joke, and the band was always in on it.
For hardcore diehards this is an essential slab of early Poison Idea, and owning it on coloured vinyl makes you exactly the kind of person the title is talking about.
