Heavy riffs and soaring choruses collide on Point North's Prepare For Despair, a 2023 album from the Los Angeles band pressed here on green vinyl.
Formed in 2017 around singer Jon Lundin, the band came up through the modern pop-punk scene before steadily pushing their sound into heavier territory, blending alternative rock with flashes of metalcore and post-hardcore. Their second full-length for Hopeless Records doubles down on that tension between big, radio-ready hooks and real weight.
Opener "Like a Weapon" sets the tone with chugging guitars and a chorus built for festival crowds. The title track "Prepare For Despair" leans into the darkness its name promises, "Recover" offers a moment of hard-won hope, and "Dark Days" brings in Jeris Johnson, whose genre-blurring style suits the record's moodier corners.
Lundin's voice is the anchor throughout, switching from clean, anthemic melodies to raw-throated screams without losing the thread, while the production keeps everything punchy and huge, with guitars stacked high and drums that hit like a fist.
It is a record for anyone who grew up on pop-punk and never quite stopped needing something louder, and it shows a young band growing into their own sound with real confidence and a clear sense of where they want to go next.
