Play is jazz with the safety net removed, trumpeter Theo Croker and pianist Sullivan Fortner meeting in a room with no charts, no plan and no interest in anything but the moment.
The two have known and admired each other since their school days, and that shared history shows in how naturally they finish each other’s phrases. Released in 2025 on ACT Music, the duo album was made without rehearsals or pre-written compositions, fourteen improvised pieces that range from brief, poetic sketches to longer, searching explorations, all played acoustically with trumpet and piano alone.
A Prayer for Peace opens the conversation with quiet gravity, Light Remains stretches past five minutes in a patient, glowing exchange, Then We Danced lets a little joy slip through, and As We Are takes its time with an honest, unforced calm.
Everything here happens in real time, which gives the record a thrilling sense of risk and trust. Listen for the way Fortner leaves space for Croker’s trumpet to speak, and how Croker answers with warmth rather than flash. It is unfiltered, intimate and often surprisingly tender, a fine example of what two master improvisers can do when they simply listen, respond and let the music decide where it goes.
