Placebo's Without You I'm Nothing is the 1998 album where Brian Molko's nasal sneer met songs big enough to swallow the clubs it was sneering at.
The London trio had already caused a stir with their 1996 debut, all glam provocation and punk speed. For the follow-up, with Steve Hewitt now locked in behind the kit alongside Molko and bassist Stefan Olsdal, they slowed down just enough to let the darkness spread. The result is moodier and more seductive, a record about obsession, dependency and self-loathing that still knows how to dance. Even David Bowie was a fan, later recording the title track with them as a duet.
"Pure Morning" opens with a looping, hypnotic guitar figure and a spoken mantra that became the band's calling card. "Every You Every Me" is a tight, propulsive burst of nervous energy, while "You Don't Care About Us" pairs a soaring chorus with a sharp edge of bitterness. "My Sweet Prince" drifts into narcotic slow motion, fragile and devastating, and the title track simmers rather than explodes.
Few alternative records from the late nineties sound this deliberately glamorous and this openly wounded at the same time.
It remains the album where Placebo became Placebo, eyeliner, heartbreak and all.
