PJ Morton refuses to choose between the club and the church on Saturday Night / Sunday Morning, an eighteen-song double album split cleanly across two LPs.
The New Orleans singer, songwriter and keyboardist has always lived in both worlds. He grew up the son of a gospel bishop, spent years on the road playing keys with Maroon 5, and has become a multiple Grammy winner on his own terms. This time he stopped trying to keep his two sides apart, releasing the album independently on his own Morton Records with one half devoted to grown-up R&B and the other to gospel, each running exactly the same length.
The Saturday songs are warm and unhurried, built on rich keys and Morton's easy, honeyed vocals. "Mutual" is a sweet, slow-rolling love song, and "Mess" gets a bright lift from trumpeter Keyon Harrold. Then the mood turns toward the light. "Mercy," the gospel single, arrives with real conviction, and "Close Enough" carries the kind of quiet faith that sounds lived rather than preached.
What makes it work is that both halves feel like the same man on different nights of the same week. Played straight through, it's a portrait of an artist who has stopped apologising for any part of himself, and the double vinyl gives each side room to breathe.
