Trompe Le Monde is the Pixies going out at full throttle, the 1991 album that closed their original run with sci-fi obsessions and surf-punk velocity, here on a single LP.

Produced by Gil Norton, who had also steered Doolittle and Bossanova, it was the band's fourth studio album and the last to feature founding bassist Kim Deal before the split that came two years later. Black Francis dominates the songwriting so thoroughly that the record is often called a solo album in all but name, yet Joey Santiago and David Lovering play with ferocious focus throughout.

Planet of Sound tears out of the gate as one of their most abrasive singles, while Alec Eiffel salutes the engineer behind Paris's most famous tower. U-Mass skewers campus life over a grinding riff, and Head On, their cover of The Jesus and Mary Chain, becomes a punchy, radio-ready rocker. Eric Drew Feldman's keyboards add an extra layer of strangeness across the record.

The lyrics drift toward space travel, alien lore and Roswell conspiracies, which suits a band that always sounded slightly beamed in from somewhere else.

It bridges their late-80s peak and the reunion that followed many years later, and plenty of fans still rank it as the heaviest and most underrated record they ever made.
