The other side of the Pixies story gets its due on Complete B Sides: 1988-97, a 2LP set gathering the songs that lived on the flip sides of their singles.

First compiled in 2001, the collection rounds up all 19 non-album tracks from the band's original 4AD run, now remastered and expanded with a fourth side of six live recordings drawn from later singles, including the 1997 reissue of Debaser. For a band whose albums were already packed with strange detours, the B-sides were often where the weirdest ideas went to flourish.

Manta Ray delivers a short, sharp jolt of surf-punk, while Wave of Mutilation (UK Surf) slows one of their best-loved songs into a dreamy, underwater drift. Into the White hands the spotlight to Kim Deal in a haze of feedback, and their cover of Neil Young's Winterlong reveals a gentler, harmony-led side of the band.

The closing live side catches Pixies at full tilt, a raw reminder of how ferocious they could be on stage, and a fitting send-off for a set built on surprises.
