Pink Floyd's debut, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, is the sound of British psychedelia taking shape in real time, presented here on 180 gram vinyl.

Recorded at Abbey Road in 1967 with producer Norman Smith, it captures the band in its original form, led by the singular imagination of Syd Barrett. Barrett wrote most of the album, and his songs blend nursery-rhyme whimsy, science-fiction wonder and English eccentricity in ways no one had quite heard before. Within a year he would be gone from the group, which makes this record a unique snapshot.

Opener "Astronomy Domine" launches straight into space with echoing guitar and urgent vocals, and "Lucifer Sam" prowls on a spy-movie riff about a mysterious cat. The centrepiece, "Interstellar Overdrive," is a wild instrumental freak-out that shows the band's live experiments at full stretch, while closer "Bike" is a giddy oddity that ends in a swirl of strange noises.

Richard Wright's organ and Nick Mason's restless drumming give the songs a kaleidoscopic depth, with Roger Waters anchoring it all on bass and the studio itself treated as another instrument.

It is the foundation stone of everything Pink Floyd would become, and on heavyweight vinyl it remains a vivid, colourful trip worth taking again.
