Meddle is the sound of Pink Floyd finding the road to their 1970s peak, and this limited Japanese edition brings the 1971 album to collectors as an import pressing.

After the sprawling experiments of Atom Heart Mother, the band spent much of 1971 working between tour dates at EMI's Abbey Road, AIR and Morgan Studios in London, producing the record themselves. What emerged was more focused and cohesive, a band learning how to stretch an idea across a whole side without losing the thread.

That side is Echoes, a 23-minute piece that grew from a single piano note Richard Wright fed through a Leslie speaker. It drifts, swells and dissolves across all of side two, and its patient build pointed straight towards The Dark Side of the Moon. Side one opens with One of These Days, driven by a pulsing, echo-drenched bassline and Nick Mason's lone, menacing spoken line. Fearless fades out on Liverpool FC supporters singing You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield, while Seamus features a howling dog with surprisingly decent timing.

Hipgnosis designed the sleeve, an ear underwater catching ripples of sound, a fitting image for a record so concerned with space and echo.

For Floyd collectors, a Japanese pressing of this pivotal album makes a handsome addition to the shelf.
