8-Tracks boils Pink Floyd's 1970s peak down to a single 180 gram LP, sequenced by Steven Wilson to play straight through like one of the band's own album sides.

Wilson links each song to the next using sound effects drawn from the original multitracks, so the transitions feel familiar even when the neighbours are new. Hearing Meddle, The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall rub shoulders in one sitting is half the fun.

The name refers to the old 8-track cartridge, and so does the prize for collectors. "Pigs on the Wing" closes the record in its full form, with the Snowy White guitar solo that joined its two halves, a version previously heard only on the 1977 cartridge release of Animals. Here it finally gets a proper place on a vinyl side, right where it belongs at the close.

Elsewhere, "Wot's... Uh the Deal" offers a rare moment of acoustic calm from Obscured by Clouds, "Time" trades vocals between David Gilmour and Richard Wright, and "Wish You Were Here" still aches as much as it did the first time around.

For a newcomer, it is a compact way in. For the long-time fan, the Wilson edit and the rarity give it a good reason to sit beside the original albums.
