Pinback's Summer in Abaddon is indie rock built like a fine watch, every interlocking part ticking along in quiet, hypnotic sync.
Released in 2004 on Touch and Go, the San Diego band's third full-length found core duo Rob Crow and Zach Smith recording in their own home studio, layering guitars, bass and voices until the songs felt both intricate and strangely cozy. Their great trick has always been tension without volume: melodies that circle each other patiently until a chorus quietly opens up like a window.
Non Photo-Blue opens with a nervy, propulsive pulse, Smith's melodic bass doing as much singing as either vocalist. Fortress builds from spindly picking into one of the band's most stirring refrains, and Syracuse tumbles forward with a restless, chiming energy. AFK closes the album with a slow-burning patience that rewards anyone who stays for the whole ride.
Lyrically the record is cryptic and melancholy, full of half-glimpsed images and sideways confessions, but the harmonies keep it warm. Crow and Smith trade lines and stack their voices so neatly that the songs feel like private conversations you happen to overhear.
For listeners who love the precise, emotional side of indie rock, this belongs on the short list of the era's most rewarding albums.
