Phoenix's Alpha Zulu comes pressed on coke bottle green vinyl, the French band's bright, bittersweet seventh album, recorded inside the Louvre Palace.

Thomas Mars and company set up in a studio at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, working between 2020 and 2022 surrounded by centuries of art and design. The record was inspired by Philippe Zdar of Cassius, their longtime friend and adviser, who had produced three of their earlier albums and died in 2019. Phoenix produced it themselves, and his spirit hovers over every glossy detail.

The title track bursts out of the gate with pounding drums and a chant-like hook, while "Tonight" pairs Mars with Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig for a breezy, sunlit duet. "Winter Solstice" slows things to a gorgeous, shimmering crawl, and closer "Identical," first heard in 2020, glides on glittering synths and a gently insistent groove.

It is a short, sharp record, just ten songs, but packed with the effortless melodic sparkle that made Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix such a phenomenon, and the band sound genuinely rejuvenated by the setting.

For fans who like their indie pop elegant and slightly melancholy, this green pressing is a gem worth keeping close to the turntable all year round.
