Phish bottle a little of their live chemistry on Evolve, the Vermont band's sixteenth studio album, pressed here as a coloured 2LP set.

Released in 2024 on the band's own JEMP label, it was their first studio record in four years, following Sigma Oasis. Producers Bryce Goggin and Vance Powell recorded the band across several studios, and a number of the songs had already lived earlier lives on Trey Anastasio's solo albums before the full band got hold of them and stretched them out. Hearing them reshaped by all four members is half the fun.

Hey Stranger opens the album with an easy, welcoming warmth, and the title track Evolve and Oblivion were among the first songs fans heard, both built on Anastasio's melodic guitar lines and the band's instinctive, telepathic interplay. The vinyl edition also includes The Well, a song left off the standard digital sequence, which gives collectors a small but welcome extra.

More than four decades into their career, Phish still sound curious and generous, happy to follow a groove wherever it leads. Evolve gives longtime fans plenty to dig into, and it works as a friendly way in for anyone who has only ever caught the band on a summer festival bill.
