Philip Glass at his most inviting: Glassworks gathers six compact pieces from 1982 that carried minimalism to a far wider audience, pressed on limited 180-gram blue vinyl.
After a run of large-scale stage and concert works, Glass set out to write something shorter and more accessible, made for the recording studio and, famously, for listening on personal cassette players. The original release even arrived with separate mixes for the LP and the cassette. Performed by the Philip Glass Ensemble with Michael Riesman, it became one of his most successful records and made his name familiar far beyond new-music circles.
Solo piano begins the set on "Opening", rippling triplets that seem to hover in place. "Floe" bursts in with saxophones and horns in bright, insistent cycles, while "Facades", first written for the film Koyaanisqatsi but left out of it, glides on soprano saxophones and low strings. "Rubric" races with nervous, circular energy before the closing reprise brings everything home.
Each piece is short enough to feel like a song, which is precisely why the album works so well as an introduction to Glass's hypnotic, pulsing language.
This blue pressing is a striking home for music that still sounds remarkably modern, ideal for focused listening or for letting the patterns wash over a quiet room.
