Phil Collins brought thundering drums and big-hearted songwriting to the jungle for Disney's Tarzan in 1999, and the soundtrack swings back onto green vinyl.

Rather than having the characters burst into song, the film let Collins narrate the story from outside the action, his voice carrying the emotional weight while Tarzan grew from orphaned infant to lord of the jungle. Collins wrote the songs and sang most of them himself, even recording versions in several languages, and the approach gave Tarzan a sound unlike any Disney musical before it.

Two Worlds opens with a rush of pounding percussion and soaring melody, setting the scale for everything that follows. You'll Be in My Heart, a tender lullaby that won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, became one of the best-loved ballads in the Disney canon. Son of Man is a buoyant coming-of-age anthem, and Strangers Like Me bursts with wide-eyed curiosity. Mark Mancina's score fills the closing stretch with sweeping strings and layered drums, weaving Collins' themes into rich orchestral cues.
