Phil Collins turned his gaze outward on ...But Seriously in 1989, and this 180-gram 2LP edition is set to return his biggest UK album to the turntable.

After the dance-pop sheen of No Jacket Required, Collins and co-producer Hugh Padgham aimed for weightier subjects, tackling homelessness, apartheid and the Troubles alongside songs about love and family. The gamble paid off spectacularly. It became the UK's best-selling album of 1990.

"Another Day in Paradise", with David Crosby on backing vocals, turned a hard look at homelessness into a worldwide hit and won the Grammy for Record of the Year. "I Wish It Would Rain Down" brings in Eric Clapton for a gospel-flavoured guitar ballad, while "Something Happened on the Way to Heaven", originally written for the Four Tops, bursts with Phenix Horns brass.

At the other end of the scale sits "Colours", a sprawling, near nine-minute piece that shows his prog roots never fully went away. Steve Winwood, Leland Sklar and Pino Palladino also turn up in the credits, and the playing is immaculate from start to finish.

Spread across four sides, the full album finally has room to breathe, and it stands as the peak of Collins' commercial powers with a conscience to match.
