Silver Shade is Peter Murphy's tenth solo album and a reminder that the voice which invented goth's whole vocabulary never actually needed the makeup, spread across 2LP.

Murphy came out of the late 1970s British underground fronting Bauhaus, a band that essentially conjured goth rock into being with a nine minute single about Bela Lugosi and then spent four albums refusing to repeat itself. Five decades on, that baritone is still the most recognisable instrument he owns, and this 2025 record puts it front and centre rather than burying it in atmosphere. Youth, of Killing Joke, produces, which is exactly the right pairing, someone who understands that menace and melody are not opposites.

Swoon opens the album with Trent Reznor contributing to the murk, all industrial grit under Murphy's croon, while Hot Roy struts with a glam swagger he has never quite abandoned. The title track slows into something genuinely stately, Murphy circling a melody rather than chasing it, and Let the Flowers Grow closes the record as a duet with Boy George, two survivors of the same era trading verses with no need to prove anything.

Fifty years in, Murphy is still the most theatrical man in any room he enters, and still entirely serious about it.
