Peter Murphy's Deep is the 1989 album where the former Bauhaus frontman stepped out of the gothic shadows and into the light of American alternative radio.
His third solo album found Murphy working with his band The Hundred Men, and the partnership gave his songs a rich, muscular backbone. Where Bauhaus had dealt in stark drama, Deep is lusher and more romantic, though it never loses the brooding intensity or that famous baritone that made him an icon of post-punk.
"Cuts You Up" became the breakthrough, a slow-burning, elegant ballad that turned into a modern rock radio staple in the US and introduced Murphy to a whole new audience. "Deep Ocean Vast Sea" opens the record with swirling, mysterious atmosphere, while "A Strange Kind of Love" is one of his most tender and haunting performances. "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem" adds a dash of cabaret decadence.
Throughout, the production balances shimmering guitars with an undercurrent of darkness, letting Murphy's voice glide between velvet croon and full theatrical command.
More than three decades later, Deep still stands as a high point of his solo career, a graceful bridge between the goth and new wave of the early 1980s and the alternative rock boom that followed. For anyone who only knows him from Bauhaus, it's a revelation.
