Peter Gabriel's second solo album takes its nickname from the cover, Gabriel's fingers clawing through his own photograph, and Scratch arrives here on blue 180-gram vinyl with a booklet.
Released in 1978, a year after his solo debut, it was the record where Gabriel stopped looking back at Genesis and started sharpening his own edges. Robert Fripp produced, steering him away from grand gestures toward something leaner, edgier and happier to sound a little rough around the corners.
The band is stacked: Fripp on guitar, Tony Levin on bass, Jerry Marotta on drums, Roy Bittan on keys and Larry Fast on synths. "On the Air" bursts open with nervy energy, "D.I.Y." pairs a bouncy hook with a proudly independent streak, and "Mother of Violence" drops to a hushed, piano-led meditation on fear. "White Shadow" builds into one of the album's most atmospheric moments, with Fripp's guitar slicing across the top.
It's the bridge between the theatrical Gabriel of the early seventies and the boundary-pushing artist who would follow, and you can hear him testing ideas he would later chase much further.
Long treated as the overlooked middle child of his early run, Scratch rewards a fresh listen, and the blue pressing makes it a striking addition to any Gabriel shelf.
