Pet Shop Boys went quietly rogue on Release, a 2002 album that traded club beats for guitars, reissued here in its 2017 remastered version.
Their eighth studio album was made mostly at Neil Tennant's home studio in County Durham, on the edge of the moors, and Chris Lowe has said that remote, contemplative setting shaped the music. At Lowe's suggestion they moved away from dance-floor sounds, and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr came in to play on seven of the ten tracks. The duo produced it themselves, with Michael Brauer mixing, and photographer Wolfgang Tillmans suggested the title.
Opener "Home and Dry" is one of their loveliest songs, a gentle, aching portrait of waiting for someone to come home safe. "I Get Along" swells into a big, wistful chorus, while "London", co-written and produced with Chris Zippel, adds a more urgent pulse. "Love Is a Catastrophe" is a sweeping heartbreak ballad, and the part that sounds like a guitar solo was actually played on a keyboard, with Marr's real guitar weaving around it.
Overlooked by some on release, it has aged into one of the duo's most affecting records, intimate and melodic. The 2017 remaster is a fine excuse to rediscover it.
