Pennywise went back to the band's earliest notebooks for Yesterdays, a loud and heartfelt album built from songs that had waited more than two decades to be recorded.
Released on Epitaph in 2014, it was the first Pennywise record after Jim Lindberg returned to the microphone, reuniting the classic lineup with Fletcher Dragge, Randy Bradbury and Byron McMackin. Most of the material was written in the band's early days with original bassist Jason Thirsk, whose death in 1996 left a permanent mark on the Hermosa Beach crew. Finally giving his songs a home made the album a tribute as much as a comeback.
The sound is pure Southern California skate punk, with buzzsaw guitars, gang vocals and tempos that rarely touch the brakes. What You Deserve opens the album at a full sprint, and Violence Never Ending charges out with furious, defiant energy. Thanksgiving keeps the momentum rolling, while No Way Out revisits an early song first heard on a 1989 EP, now played with the muscle of a band that has spent decades on the road.
Lindberg sounds fired up, and Dragge's riffs hit with the same reckless joy they had at the start.
It's a record for anyone who grew up on Pennywise's anthems, and a moving salute to a friend who helped start it all.
