Rearviewmirror Volume 2 collects the quieter, more reflective side of Pearl Jam's first dozen years, pressed on two 140-gram LPs in a gatefold jacket.

The original 2004 greatest hits split the band's catalogue in two, one half for the rockers and this one, the Down Side, for the ballads and slow burners. Running largely in chronological order from 1991 to 2003, it shows how a band born in Seattle's loudest scene grew into some of the most affecting songwriters of their generation.

It opens with Black, heard here in a 2004 remix by Brendan O'Brien, Eddie Vedder pouring everything into one of the great heartbreak songs of the decade. Daughter shows off the band's acoustic warmth and its gift for a quietly devastating melody, while Last Kiss, their unlikely take on a 1960s teen tragedy song, became one of their biggest hits almost by accident. The set closes with Yellow Ledbetter, Mike McCready's guitar weeping over Vedder's famously hard-to-decipher lyrics, the perfect way to fade out.

Spread across four sides, it plays like a late-night conversation with an old friend. For anyone who prefers Pearl Jam with the lights down low, this is the volume to keep closest to the turntable on quiet nights.
