PARTYNEXTDOOR's self-titled debut mixtape sounded like Toronto after midnight, a hazy, moody R&B blueprint that helped define the OVO Sound aesthetic.

Released in 2013 through OVO Sound, it arrived after Drake's October's Very Own blog had been teasing his music online. He produced much of it himself, with Noah 40 Shebib adding production on Over Here, and its original physical copies were sold only at the OVO merch booth on Drake's tour, a low-key rollout that suited the music's after-dark mood.

Make a Mil glides on woozy synths and a slow-motion bounce, while Wus Good / Curious stitches two moods into one late-night confession. The single Over Here, featuring Drake, gave the project its biggest spotlight, and Welcome to the Party sets the scene with a short, atmospheric opener that pulls you straight into his world.

Built around samples from artists like Gold Panda, Com Truise and Miguel, the production is all blurred edges and slow-burning tension, a world away from the glossy radio R&B of the time. The vocals sit low in the mix, half-whispered, as if he is letting you in on a secret.

More than a decade later, it still sounds like the template for a whole wave of after-hours R&B, and it feels right at home on vinyl.
