Parliament's Osmium is the strange, brilliant first chapter of P-Funk, the group's 1970 debut spread across two 140-gram black LPs on this UK import.

Released on Invictus, the album put George Clinton's Parliaments singers together with the same musicians who were also making records as Funkadelic. It sounds much closer to that band's acid-soaked early work than to the sleek Parliament that would rule the mid-70s, with gospel, country, doo-wop and psychedelic rock all thrown into the same pot. Contract trouble then kept the Parliament name off new records for years, which only deepened its cult reputation.

Opener "I Call My Baby Pussycat" struts on a fat, greasy groove, while "Little Ole Country Boy" takes a detour into twang only this crew would attempt. "The Silent Boatman" closes the original running order on a stately, almost hymnal note. The second disc rounds up period single sides and material that stayed in the vaults at the time, including two different takes of "Breakdown", giving a fuller picture of the band before the Mothership ever landed.

For funk collectors, this is the root system, messy and funny and far more adventurous than a debut had any right to be. Laid out over four sides, it makes the leap to everything that followed feel completely logical.
