Papa Roach's Infest is the 2000 breakthrough that put Vacaville, California, on the nu metal map and handed a generation of teenagers its rallying cry.

Jacoby Shaddix and his bandmates had spent years grinding through the Northern California club circuit before DreamWorks signed them, and Infest made up for lost time fast. Built on rap-rock verses, detuned riffs and scream-along choruses, it caught the exact moment heavy guitars and hip-hop were colliding on MTV and modern rock radio.

Producer Jay Baumgardner gave the band a tight, punchy sound that makes every hook land like a fist. Last Resort is the obvious monster, its skittering guitar line and blunt plea for help still instantly recognisable two decades on, while Broken Home digs into family breakdown with raw candour. Between Angels and Insects snarls at consumer culture, and the title track Infest opens the record with a jolt of adrenaline.

What gives it staying power is the honesty underneath the noise. Shaddix wrote about pain, anger and survival with a directness that connected deeply with listeners who felt unheard, and those songs still hit just as hard today. Turn it up loud and the old angst comes rushing straight back, every chorus still begging to be shouted along.
