Pantera's Far Beyond Driven is groove metal at its most punishing, and this pressing spins it on blue and white vinyl.
Released in 1994, the band's follow-up to Vulgar Display of Power somehow reached number one on the Billboard 200, a startling result for music this uncompromising. Produced by longtime collaborator Terry Date with drummer Vinnie Paul, it also marked the first album credit for guitarist Dimebag Darrell under that famous name. Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown complete a lineup operating at full ferocity, louder and nastier than ever.
There is no easing in. "5 Minutes Alone" grinds on a slow, menacing groove and a story of revenge that became a fan favorite, while "I'm Broken" rides one of Dimebag's most iconic riffs, a twisting, swaggering monster. "Becoming" pairs pummeling double kick drums with squealing harmonics that seem to bend reality, and the album closes on a surprisingly hypnotic cover of Black Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," a moody comedown after all the carnage.
Far Beyond Driven captures Pantera at the peak of their powers and popularity, a record that still sets the standard for heavy guitar tone. On colored vinyl it looks as striking as it sounds, a bold piece for any metal collector's crate.
