Twenty years on, Panic! At The Disco's debut A Fever You Can't Sweat Out returns as a limited 20th anniversary deluxe double LP on red vinyl.
Released in 2005, the album was made by a group of Las Vegas teenagers who had graduated high school barely a month before recording began. After posting demos online, they caught the attention of Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, who signed them to his Decaydance imprint. Producer Matt Squire captured the sessions in College Park, Maryland, and guitarist Ryan Ross wrote lyrics full of wit, theatrics and verbose song titles. The deluxe set adds a second disc of demo recordings.
The album splits neatly in two. The first half is jittery pop-punk laced with electronics, highlighted by "Time to Dance" and its razor-sharp hooks. After an intermission, the second half turns to vaudeville strings and piano, delivering "I Write Sins Not Tragedies," the cello-driven wedding drama that made them stars, and "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off." Closer "Build God, Then We'll Talk" ends the show with a sly, cabaret wink.
Dramatic and brilliantly overdressed, this is an emo-era landmark that still sounds gloriously unlike anything else. On two red records, it makes a fitting celebration for longtime fans.
