P.M. Dawn's The Bliss Album…? floats back onto turntables as a limited edition blue vinyl pressing, a fitting hue for one of the dreamiest pop-rap records of 1993.

Led by Prince Be, P.M. Dawn had already shown on their 1991 debut that hip-hop could be soft, spiritual and deeply melodic. Their second album pushed that vision further, layering soul harmonies over hip-hop drums and drifting closer to dream pop than to most rap of its era. It was introspective at a time when swagger ruled the charts.

The singles remain the big draw, and they have aged beautifully. I'd Die Without You, which first appeared on the Boomerang soundtrack, is a slow-burning ballad of rare vulnerability, and Looking Through Patient Eyes builds its hook around a sample of George Michael's Father Figure, with Cathy Dennis adding backing vocals.

Elsewhere, a cover of The Beatles' Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) shows just how wide the duo's musical curiosity stretched, and the album flows like one long, hazy daydream, best heard from start to finish in a single sitting.

Gentle, searching and quietly ahead of its time, it is a record that has aged into a cult treasure, and one that sounds especially lovely spinning on blue wax.
