New Jersey thrash lifers Overkill hit their stride again on Immortalis, and this limited coloured vinyl pressing brings their 2007 assault back to the turntable.
By the time this record landed, Overkill had been grinding away for over two decades, outlasting trends and line-up changes on sheer stubbornness. Immortalis was self-produced and recorded at Gear Recording Studio in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and it marked the first studio album with drummer Ron Lipnicki behind the kit. Bassist D.D. Verni and singer Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth wrote all of the music, and their partnership sounds as tight as ever.
Devils In The Mist kicks the door in with galloping riffs and Blitz's trademark sneer, setting a pace the album rarely abandons. Skull And Bones brings in Lamb of God's Randy Blythe for a vocal tag team that sounds like two old friends yelling across a bar fight. Hellish Pride stomps with mid-tempo menace, and Overkill V... The Brand continues the band's long-running series of self-titled songs with all the swagger that implies.
It is lean, mean thrash made by people who never once considered slowing down. Longtime members of the Wrecking Crew will want this one on coloured wax, and newcomers will find plenty of reasons to start here.
