OutKast's ATLiens beamed Atlanta hip-hop into orbit in 1996, and this green 2LP UK import brings the mothership back in to land.

Arriving two years after Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, the duo's second album found André 3000 and Big Boi stepping behind the boards alongside Organized Noize and reinventing themselves as interstellar outsiders. The production borrowed from dub and gospel, the lyrics turned inward and philosophical, and the result made it clear the South had something new to say. Many critics now place it among the finest hip-hop albums ever made.

The sound is spacious and echo-heavy, built on deep bass and ghostly keys. "Elevators (Me & You)" floats on a hypnotic, low-slung groove as the pair trace their rise from struggle to fame, "Two Dope Boyz (In a Cadillac)" swaggers with cosmic attitude, and the title track leans into the album's dub-inspired bounce. Across fifteen tracks, the two MCs trade verses with a looseness that hides just how sharp the writing really is.
