Our Lady Peace aimed high on Happiness... Is Not a Fish That You Can Catch, the 1999 album that debuted at number one in Canada, back on vinyl as a Canadian import.
Stung by critics who called them derivative, the Toronto band set out to make something that challenged listeners, and longtime producer Arnold Lanni helped them do it. Raine Maida has said the album grew out of obsessions, from guns and advertising to the way media tells people who to be, with a fear of death running underneath. It was also their first record made entirely on digital equipment.
One Man Army opens with urgency and a huge chorus, and Is Anybody Home? and Thief became two of the band's best-loved singles, balancing Maida's distinctive falsetto with soaring, layered guitars. The closer, Stealing Babies, brings in jazz great Elvin Jones, John Coltrane's former drummer, who laid down his part in a single take.
It is darker and stranger than the radio hits suggest, full of filtered percussion, guitars recorded through antique microphones, including one once used by Stevie Wonder, and unexpected detours.
Ambitious, emotional and loaded with hooks, it remains a high point of Canadian alternative rock and a welcome return for anyone who wore out the CD.
