Otto Klemperer's Wagner is broad, granite-solid and gripping, and this three-LP set gathers his celebrated orchestral recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra into one commanding collection.
Klemperer was in his mid-seventies when he made these sessions at London's Kingsway Hall in 1960 and 1961, working with producer Walter Legge, the man who founded the Philharmonia. By then the German conductor had become the orchestra's guiding figure, admired for clear textures, unhurried tempos and an architectural sense of structure that lets every inner line be heard.
The programme sweeps across Wagner's career. The early "Rienzi" overture and "The Flying Dutchman" overture crackle with youthful drama, while the "Lohengrin" and "Meistersinger" preludes glow with warmth and ceremony. From the Ring cycle come the "Ride of the Valkyries," "Forest Murmurs" and a towering "Siegfried's Funeral March," and the set also finds room for the hushed prelude to "Parsifal," the "Tristan und Isolde" prelude and an ecstatic "Isolde's Liebestod."
Klemperer never rushes the big moments, and the result is music that feels monumental rather than merely loud, with brass that blazes and strings that sing without strain.
For collectors of great Wagner conducting, these performances remain a benchmark, and three full discs give them all the room they deserve.
