John Dwyer's restless Osees went back to jamming for Off Course, a five-song plunge into extended psych-rock released in 2026, here on limited blue vinyl.
Surprise-released on Dwyer's Deathgod Records, the album was recorded at Stu Stu Studios and built the old-fashioned way. Dwyer has explained that the band returned to an older method of writing, playing for long stretches until the songs revealed themselves, before Tom Dolas and longtime collaborator Brigid Dawson were brought in to help finish things off. Dan Rincon and Paul Quattrone form the twin-drummer engine, with Tim Hellman on bass.
The title track "Off Course" runs past nine minutes and sets the tone, a band chasing a groove just to see where it leads. "Hecete's Reflection Is a Trick" stretches almost as far before "The Trick" picks up its thread, and the pairing plays like one long, shape-shifting excursion. "Syringe" is the compact outlier at a little over three minutes, and "The Brute On His Knees" brings the record to a close.
At just over half an hour, it feels discovered rather than composed, the sound of musicians listening hard to each other in real time. That spontaneity is the whole appeal, and it makes Off Course one of the more adventurous entries in a very long discography.
