Everything Is Possible! The Best of Os Mutantes gathers the wildest, most joyful moments from Brazil's great psychedelic band, now on blue vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
Rita Lee and brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias formed Os Mutantes in São Paulo and quickly became the rock heartbeat of the Tropicália movement, mixing Beatles-era psychedelia with Brazilian rhythms, fuzz guitars and absurdist humor. Their records were little known outside Brazil for decades, until musicians like Kurt Cobain and Beck began singing their praises. This compilation, first released in 1999 on David Byrne's Luaka Bop label, introduced them to a whole new audience.
The selection covers their classic run from the late 1960s into the early 1970s. "Panis Et Circenses" is a dizzy, orchestral marvel that famously grinds to a halt before springing back to life, "A Minha Menina" bursts with fuzzed-out joy, and "Bat Macumba" turns a simple chant into something hypnotic. Two versions of "Baby," recorded a few years apart, show how quickly the band's sound evolved.
It is the ideal entry point to one of the most inventive bands of the era, and proof that great psychedelia was being made far beyond London and San Francisco. Expect to fall happily down a very colorful rabbit hole.
