Orgy's Candyass is late-1990s alt-metal in full glam make-up, remastered for this pressing on orange with black swirl vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
The Los Angeles band were the first act signed to Korn frontman Jonathan Davis's Elementree imprint, and their 1998 debut turned that gamble into a platinum record. Produced by Josh Abraham with the band, it fused down-tuned guitars, industrial programming and new wave melody into something slicker and more danceable than most of their nu-metal peers. Jay Gordon's cool, detached vocals sat on top of synth parts that leaned heavily on the Korg Triton, giving the album its glossy, machine-made sheen.
Lead single "Stitches" set the template with its stop-start riffing and electronic pulse, and "Social Enemies" opens the record with a sneer. The big breakthrough came with their cover of New Order's "Blue Monday", which kept the original's icy synth line while bolting on a wall of guitars. Deeper cuts like "Fiend" and "Dizzy" show how well the formula held up across a full album.
Few records from the late 1990s capture the era's blend of club and mosh pit quite so neatly. This remastered edition gives a fresh shine to a cult favorite that still sounds sharp when played loud.
