Opeth's Deliverance is the heavy half of one of metal's great double acts, and this anniversary edition spreads it across two clear 140-gram LPs.

Released in 2002, it was recorded in Gothenburg during the same sessions as its gentle twin, Damnation. The band first imagined the pair as a double album before the label split them, and Deliverance became the one that leaned into crushing weight. Mikael Åkerfeldt co-produced with Steven Wilson, who also added Mellotron, piano and backing vocals, while Andy Sneap handled the mix.

There are only six songs, and most of them sprawl. Wreath opens in a storm of guttural growls and lurching riffs, and the thirteen-minute title track builds to a hypnotic, stop-start finale that fans still air-drum to. For Absent Friends, named after a Genesis song, offers a brief instrumental breather, and By The Pain I See In Others closes in eerie, unsettling territory.

The lineup of Åkerfeldt, Peter Lindgren, Martín Méndez and Martin Lopez plays with surgical precision, switching from death metal fury to delicate acoustic passages without ever losing the thread.

It became the first Opeth album to chart in the US and remains a cornerstone of progressive metal, the record many fans point to when explaining why this band matters.
