Omar Apollo's God Said No is a heartbreak record with the lights turned low, and this indie-exclusive pressing comes on gleaming gold vinyl.
The Indiana-born singer's second studio album arrived in 2024, two years after Ivory introduced him to a much wider audience. Apollo called it a reflection of his life over those two years and insisted it was sequenced to be heard front to back, tracing the emotional fallout of an intense relationship that ended badly. Part of it was recorded at Abbey Road in London, with Teo Halm, Carter Lang and Blake Slatkin among his production partners.
The singles map out the terrain. Spite, Less of You and Dispose of Me move between restless R&B and something rawer, with Apollo's voice front and centre throughout. Plane Trees brings in Mustafa for a hushed, intimate duet, and actor Pedro Pascal turns up along the way for an unexpected cameo that adds a wry, human touch.
Moody production and lo-fi textures keep pulling you closer even as the lyrics push someone away.
It lands as Apollo's most atmospheric and emotionally direct work so far, the kind of late-night album that rewards being heard in order, on a turntable, with nothing else competing for attention. Few breakup records sound this lovely while hurting this much.
