OK Go swapped power-pop crunch for falsetto-laced funk on Of the Blue Colour of the Sky, their adventurous 2010 album, pressed here on 180 gram colored vinyl in a gatefold jacket.
The band, formed in Chicago and based in Los Angeles, teamed up with producer Dave Fridmann, known for his work with The Flaming Lips and MGMT, and the result is their most adventurous record. Taking its title from a 19th-century book about the supposed healing powers of blue light, the album leans into fuzzed-out grooves, Prince-inspired falsettos and woozy psychedelic textures, pushing Damian Kulash's voice in fresh directions.
"This Too Shall Pass" became a phenomenon thanks to its marching-band and Rube Goldberg machine videos, but it stands tall on record too, a stomping, chant-along anthem. "WTF?" opens the album in a squall of distorted funk, "White Knuckles" struts on a tight, wiry riff, and "End Love" softens the mood with a sweeter, more romantic glow.
Far richer than its reputation as the soundtrack to some very clever videos suggests, this is the record that proved OK Go were much more than a viral video act, and it finds them at their most ambitious and melodic. It's a gleefully strange pop record that keeps revealing new layers with every play, and it sounds terrific spinning on a turntable.
